The nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were unveiled on Wednesday, opening this year's television awards race with Apple TV's dystopian science-fiction drama Pluribus and HBO Max's medical series The Pitt widely tipped as the leading contenders. The Television Academy revealed the full slate of nominees in a single announcement, with actors Jeff Hiller and Liza Colon-Zayas presenting the categories.

The consolidated reveal marked a change from the Academy's original plan to split the announcement across two dates, with nine craft categories, including cinematography, music composition and sound editing, moved forward to join the main list. The Academy said the unified approach was designed to better accommodate the promotional campaign schedules of this year's Emmy contenders.

Pluribus, a dystopian drama led by Rhea Seehorn, entered the announcement as the projected pacesetter across program and craft fields, with anticipated recognition in the drama series, directing and writing categories. The Pitt, the reigning drama champion, was forecast to expand sharply on its haul from a year ago, with awards watchers expecting a large number of acting nominations spread across its ensemble cast.

Among distributors, Netflix was projected to lead the field once again, building on the strong tally it recorded the previous year, while streaming and premium cable services continued to dominate the most competitive categories. Other titles cited by industry forecasters as strong contenders included the limited series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, the comedy Hacks and the drama Widow's Bay.

The nominations set the stage for a months-long campaign season that will culminate in the main ceremony. Final-round voting is scheduled to run from August 17 to 26, following the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 5 and 6, which honor technical and craft achievements ahead of the primetime telecast.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on Monday, September 14, at 8 p.m. Eastern on NBC and stream on Peacock, with actress Mariska Hargitay hosting for the first time. The Law and Order: Special Victims Unit star becomes the first woman to emcee the ceremony in 15 years, adding another headline to a season that is already drawing intense attention across the television industry.
