AMD expands Helios AI rollout as data-center sales nearly double

AMD said on November 3 that customers have begun running artificial intelligence workloads on its Helios systems, marking a new stage in its challenge to Nvidia. In results released from Santa Clara, California, the company reported third-quarter data-center revenue of about $8.5 billion, up 97% from a year earlier. Reuters reported the announcement after the US stock market closed.

Chief executive Lisa Su told the earnings call that AMD began volume shipments of its Instinct MI455X accelerators during the quarter. According to the transcript published by Investing.com, initial customers including Anthropic, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle brought their first Helios racks online and are using them for their latest models and workloads. These deployment statements come from AMD.

The company said demand for both Instinct graphics processors and EPYC central processors supported its expansion. Its earnings release put total quarterly revenue at $13.4 billion, an increase of 45%. Su said demand continued to strengthen as AMD increased production of Helios and its Venice processors. The figures place the data-center business at the center of the company’s latest growth.

Other activities showed a different pattern. AMD reported combined client and gaming revenue of $3.7 billion, down 8% from a year earlier, while embedded revenue rose 29% to $1.1 billion. Reuters described the results as a counterpoint to concerns about slowing AI investment and reported that AMD shares gained about 8% in extended trading following the announcement.

AMD expects Helios deployments to expand substantially in the fourth quarter as production increases and partners including HPE, Dell, Lenovo and Supermicro start shipping systems, Su said on the call. The company forecasts quarterly revenue of about $17 billion, with a margin of 3% in either direction. Su also projected total revenue growth of more than 80% in 2027, according to Reuters. These are management expectations rather than completed sales; AMD cautioned that actual results may differ.
