AMD plans major chip supply increase in 2027 as AI demand grows

AMD plans a major increase in chip supply in 2027 to meet rising artificial intelligence demand, chief executive Lisa Su said in Taipei on October 6, according to Reuters. The US company's announcement concerns future supply, following increases already made during 2026.

Su said her Taiwan visit aimed to prepare the supply chain for higher output of central and graphics processors, or CPUs and GPUs. Reuters reported that she had met Foxconn and was due to meet TSMC, putting manufacturing partners at the centre of the expansion effort.

Memory availability is another priority. Su said AMD was working closely with memory chipmakers to secure supplies ahead of a planned South Korea visit. Samsung and SK Hynix are based there, Reuters noted. Her remarks covered components as well as processor production.

The push follows AMD's multiyear agreement with OpenAI, announced on October 6, 2025. AMD's original statement described planned deployment of six gigawatts of its graphics processors across several generations, with the first gigawatt using the Instinct MI450 series scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.

That earlier company statement provides context for the scale of planned AI infrastructure. It presented AMD as a core computing partner and included future generations of chips beyond the initial deployment. The announced timetable is a plan; that statement alone does not establish how much equipment has since been installed.

Looking further ahead, Su said AMD needed more advanced wafer capacity and was planning three to five years in advance, Reuters reported. Her comments link the proposed 2027 supply increase to longer production planning, while leaving its precise size unspecified in the report.
