Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the worldwide box office record from Avatar, Disney announced on October 4. The company estimates the Marvel film’s lifetime receipts at $2.9255 billion, against Avatar’s $2.9237 billion. The lead is about $1.8 million, and the ranking is not adjusted for inflation, as TheWrap notes.
The change follows the theatrical return of the 2019 film as Avengers Endgame: Encore. TheWrap reports that the reissue has collected $126 million across two weekends and the intervening days, comprising $36.2 million in North America and $89.8 million overseas. Those receipts add to the original film’s cumulative total.
Disney’s September 27 report had put the reissue’s opening weekend at $86 million worldwide, including $26 million domestically and $60 million internationally. At that stage, Endgame stood at $2.885 billion overall and remained behind Avatar. The October 4 announcement therefore marks a change in the all-time ranking.
The returning film also introduces audiences to Marvel’s next Avengers release. Disney says Encore includes new footage that sets up Avengers: Doomsday. Anthony and Joe Russo direct that film, with Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom instead of his earlier character, Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man.
Disney says Marvel Studios’ 38 theatrical releases have generated more than $35 billion worldwide, while seven of the ten highest-grossing films belong to its portfolio. Endgame originally brought together more than a decade of interconnected stories to conclude the Infinity Saga. The latest result adds further theatrical revenue to that established film.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to reach cinemas on December 18, according to Disney. The reissue links the earlier finale to that forthcoming release, but its current record concerns Endgame’s accumulated ticket sales. The reported worldwide totals remain estimates, with a narrow gap separating the two leading films.
