RJ Mitte, the actor known for playing Walter White Jr. in Breaking Bad and for advocating for people with disabilities, died in Brownsville, Texas, on Monday, October 12, aged 34. The Associated Press reported confirmation from authorities and his representatives, while CNN separately confirmed his death with a local justice of the peace office.
According to AP, Mitte appeared in nearly every episode across the AMC drama’s five seasons, portraying the son of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White. The series aired from 2008 to 2013. His later television work included Switched at Birth and Guardians of Justice, and he also produced independent films.
AP reported that Mitte, who had cerebral palsy, received his diagnosis at age three. His representatives said he used his visibility to challenge stereotypes and encourage greater representation. His advocacy included serving as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s.
His work also extended to Brownsville’s cultural community. Local broadcaster KRGV identified him as president of the Mitte Foundation and reported a tribute from the Mitte Cultural District. The organization remembered him as a friend and supporter of the arts whose commitment to the city would remain part of its history.
The Brownsville Police Department said the cause and manner of death were still awaiting an official determination, according to FOX Rio Grande Valley. Police said the investigation remained open and released no further details about the circumstances. The confirmed information does not establish why he died.
Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa told AP that an autopsy would be performed. Further findings therefore remain pending as the entertainment community and local cultural organizations remember both his screen work and his advocacy. No cause of death had been announced in the reports available at publication.
