Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed on October 18 that four service members died and dozens were seriously injured in a fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. He said their families had been notified and described the disaster as one of the military’s worst peacetime tragedies on Canadian soil.

The Defence Department said the fire began in the training area at about 4 p.m. local time on October 17 and spread rapidly beyond it. Military and civilian emergency teams responded together. Reuters placed the base about 210 kilometres east of Edmonton and described it as one of Canada’s largest.

The casualty figures remain provisional. Reuters reported that CBC had earlier cited unnamed sources reporting seven deaths, a figure higher than the four confirmed by Carney. The prime minister said the situation was evolving; the earlier media figure should not be treated as an officially confirmed total.

According to Associated Press reporting, the military said there was no indication of terrorist activity, while the cause remained under investigation. Alberta health officials said patients had been transferred to four hospitals: two in Edmonton, one in Red Deer and one in Calgary. No precise total of injured people was immediately available.

Carney said those affected came from bases across Canada and included reservists and soldiers from Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Reuters reported that he ordered flags on federal buildings nationwide lowered to half-staff to honour the victims. The response brings together federal, provincial and local authorities.

In his October 18 statement, Carney requested a detailed public briefing by senior officials in Wainwright, including defence and emergency preparedness ministers and Major-General Wade Rutland, alongside provincial representatives. The Defence Department said its immediate priorities were helping those affected, supporting emergency operations and protecting personnel, families and the surrounding community.
