Duane Davis was sentenced in Las Vegas on October 13 to 40 years to life in prison for organizing the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur, Reuters and ABC News reported. Known as Keffe D, the 63-year-old former gang leader received the sentence after an August murder conviction, marking a new stage in a case that has drawn decades of attention from music fans.

Judge Carli Kierny imposed the punishment after Davis was found guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon. ABC reported that he remains the only person charged in Shakur’s killing. The judge said the passage of time did not erase responsibility for taking a life, as relatives described the lasting personal loss behind the widely followed case.

Shakur was shot near the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996, and died in hospital six days later, aged 25. According to Reuters, prosecutors said Davis organized retaliation after Shakur and members of his entourage beat Davis’s nephew at the MGM Grand casino. Their account placed the attack within a feud between rival Los Angeles-area gangs.

Reuters reported that Davis described passing a gun to the back seat of a white Cadillac before a passenger fired at the vehicle carrying Shakur and record executive Marion (Suge) Knight. Prosecutors accused Davis of arranging the attack, rather than firing the shots himself. The identity of the gunman has not been conclusively established, the agency reported.

The prosecution relied on Davis’s interviews, statements to investigators and memoir, according to Reuters. ABC reported that his lawyers challenged the evidence and said he had lied about his involvement. Davis was arrested in September 2023 and pleaded not guilty. His subsequent conviction followed years in which the shooting remained one of American music’s best-known unsolved crimes.

Shakur’s relatives addressed the court about the impact of his death, ABC reported. AFP said his sister Sekyiwa remembered him as a protective brother and an advocate for vulnerable people. Davis plans to appeal his conviction, according to both outlets, so the sentencing does not end his effort to challenge the verdict. The case continues to carry significance for the family and the rapper’s listeners.
