ESA Records Samba Satellite's Targeted Reentry for Space-Debris Science

The European Space Agency said on September 1 that an airborne research team successfully recorded the targeted atmospheric reentry of its Samba satellite over the remote South Pacific. The spacecraft, formally Cluster II FM-7, entered the atmosphere at 21:39:38 UTC on August 31. Scientists flying from Tonga captured its breakup, turning the disposal of a retired satellite into an experiment intended to make future spacecraft safer and more sustainable.

ESA had adjusted Samba's orbit in January so that its final descent would occur far from populated areas and within reach of the ROSIE 2026 observation aircraft. The agency said the trajectory was accurate enough for the crew to position cameras and spectroscopic instruments near the predicted path. A tracking camera operated by the University of Stuttgart recorded the fragments and their relative positions, while complementary sensors sought signatures of particular spacecraft materials.

The measurements are designed to show when satellite components melt, vaporize and separate under extreme heat and aerodynamic forces. Researchers need direct observations because models of destructive reentry still contain important uncertainties. ESA says better data can guide engineers toward spacecraft that burn up more completely, lowering risks from surviving debris on the ground and helping scientists assess the material deposited in the upper atmosphere.

Samba was the third of four identical spacecraft in ESA's Cluster mission, which used coordinated measurements to study how the solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetic environment. The quartet ended scientific operations in 2024 after about 24 years. Salsa reentered in September 2024 and Rumba followed in October 2025. A peer-reviewed report on the Salsa airborne campaign said ten instruments acquired data and infrared cameras tracked that reentry for about 23 seconds, establishing a basis for comparison with Samba.

The final Cluster satellite, Tango, is expected to follow a similar targeted path over the South Pacific at about 21:33 UTC on September 1, with timing subject to orbital uncertainty. The same airborne team plans to observe it, giving researchers rare repeat measurements from nearly identical spacecraft under different conditions. ESA expects the combined record to support its zero-debris design work and preparations for Draco, a dedicated mission intended to study reentry from both outside and inside a disintegrating spacecraft.
