Disney announced a new Glee series for Disney+ and Hulu on October 21, bringing the musical television franchise back 11 years after its original finale. ABC News and TheWrap reported that 20th Television, the studio behind the earlier series, will produce the revival. A premiere date has not been announced.
The original followed an Ohio high school singing club and aired on Fox from 2009 to 2015 across six seasons. According to ABC News, it won six Primetime Emmys and GLAAD's outstanding comedy series award in 2010 and 2011. Its 121 original episodes are available on Hulu, giving viewers access to the earlier story before the new production arrives.
The order follows work by the original creators. TheWrap reported that Ryan Murphy said in September that he had completed a script with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Murphy told Entertainment Tonight that he had contacted about 10 original cast members, who had questions but responded enthusiastically to the idea.
Casting reports emerged later on Wednesday. TheWrap, citing sources, said Lea Michele was in talks to reprise Rachel Berry, while noting that Variety first reported her return. Representatives for Disney and Michele declined comment to TheWrap. Her participation therefore remains a reported development rather than a casting announcement from the studio.
Heather Morris also signaled a return as Brittany S. Pierce in an Instagram post, according to TheWrap and TVLine. She indicated that her character would be back for more Glee. These developments suggest familiar performers may join the revival, although the initial series announcement did not provide a cast list or explain the new storyline.
The confirmed order moves the project beyond discussion of a possible reunion. However, TheWrap reported that production details and the allocation of showrunning duties remained undisclosed. With no launch date announced, viewers await further information about the cast, story and timing of the series on Disney+ and Hulu.
