ICE Agent Kills Woman in Minneapolis: Governor and White House Clash Over Shooting

A fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis has ignited a fierce political battle between Minnesota's Democratic governor and the Trump administration, with both sides presenting starkly different accounts of what occurred.

Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot dead by an ICE officer on Wednesday morning near 33rd Street and Portland Avenue in Minneapolis. She was struck in the head while sitting in her vehicle and was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center.

The Department of Homeland Security claimed the woman attempted to ram her car into ICE agents at the scene. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the incident as 'an act of domestic terrorism,' stating the officer 'defensively shot to protect himself and the people around him.'

However, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have vehemently disputed this account. After viewing video footage of the incident, Mayor Frey declared: 'This self-defense is garbage. They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense. Having seen the video myself, that is bull****.'

Governor Walz stated during a news conference: 'We have someone dead in their car for no reason whatsoever,' calling the shooting 'preventable' and 'unnecessary.' He has placed the Minnesota National Guard on standby while urging peaceful protest.

Walz proclaimed Friday, January 9, 2026 as a 'Day of Unity' and invited all Americans to participate in acts of service to honor Good's memory.

The FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are each conducting independent investigations into the shooting. Minneapolis Public Schools announced closures for Thursday and Friday 'out of an abundance of caution.'

The incident has reignited tensions over immigration enforcement and the use of force by federal agents, with civil rights groups calling for accountability and transparency in the investigation.
