India finished first in the boxing medal table at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Friday, October 2, after Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal won their finals in Nishio, Japan. World Boxing reported that the Indian team ended the competition with three gold and three bronze medals, the most golds of any delegation. Eleven boxing titles were decided on the final day.
The three victories gave India its highest number of boxing golds at a single Asian Games. Press Trust of India reported that the country's previous high was two golds at Guangzhou in 2010, when it collected nine boxing medals overall. This year's six-medal total is therefore smaller than the 2010 haul, although the gold count is higher.
Borgohain beat China's Bao Ziyi by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the women's 75-kilogram final. The result turned the silver medal she won at the previous Asian Games into gold. PTI reported that the final fell on her 29th birthday and that she described the victory as a particularly meaningful birthday present.
In the women's 65-kilogram final, Hooda defeated Chinese Taipei's Chen Nien-chin by a 3-2 split decision. Panghal then beat South Korea's Kim Minseong 4-0 in the men's 80-kilogram final. World Boxing's account lists all three bouts among Friday's 11 finals at Nishio Gymnasium.
World Boxing placed Uzbekistan second in the sport's medal table with two golds, one silver and four bronzes, followed by Kazakhstan with two golds and three bronzes. The governing body's tally puts India's three titles ahead of both teams, while PTI said the victories ended a 12-year wait for another Indian women's boxing gold at the Asian Games.
The boxing programme has now concluded, so these standings are final for the sport. The wider Asian Games continue in Japan until October 4, with medals in other disciplines still to be decided. India's boxing results will remain a distinct part of its overall Games performance as the remaining events finish.
