Nationwide protests have erupted across Iran, spreading to more than 145 cities in 28 provinces as citizens demand political change amid a severe economic crisis. The demonstrations, which began on December 28, 2025, in Tehran Grand Bazaar over rising prices, have escalated into calls for regime change.

Security forces including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, police, and Basij militia have responded with what human rights organizations describe as a deadly crackdown. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch issued a joint statement condemning the unlawful use of firearms, metal pellets, and mass arbitrary arrests against protesters.

At least 44 people have reportedly been killed since the protests began, according to monitoring groups. Hundreds more have been detained in facilities across the country, with reports of systematic human rights violations. The Iranian government has implemented nationwide internet blackouts in an attempt to suppress the movement.

Protesters have been heard chanting slogans including Death to the dictator and demanding fundamental political transformation. Supreme Leader Khamenei has declared the demonstrators rioters requiring forceful suppression.

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Tehran, stating that Iran would be hit very hard if authorities continue killing demonstrators.
