Ismail Lasim was sworn in on Sunday as chief minister of Malaysia's Negeri Sembilan state, completing a rapid transfer of power after an election delivered a commanding legislative majority to Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional. The 67-year-old Juasseh assemblyman took the oath before state ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir at Istana Besar Seri Menanti, Bernama reported.
The new administration rests on 25 of the 36 seats in the state assembly. Official results reported by The Star from Election Commission data gave Barisan Nasional 18 seats and Perikatan Nasional seven, while Pakatan Harapan secured the remaining 11. Nineteen seats are required for a simple majority, so the two governing coalitions also clear the threshold for a two-thirds majority.
Ismail said the state executive council should be finalised by Friday at the latest. He plans to consult Barisan Nasional leaders before presenting the proposed team to Tuanku Muhriz for approval, and said the possible inclusion of Perikatan Nasional representatives would form part of those discussions. He indicated that a 10-member council, matching the previous structure, appeared suitable but remained undecided.
The appointment follows Ismail's victory in Juasseh by 4,091 votes over candidates from Pakatan Harapan and Bersatu. Bernama said his elected career began in 1999 and that he served on the state executive council for three consecutive terms from 2004 until 2018, including responsibility for education and human-capital policy.
The result marks a sharp change from the 2023 state election, when Pakatan Harapan won 17 seats and Barisan Nasional took 14, with Perikatan Nasional holding five. In the new contest, Barisan Nasional captured exactly half the chamber, while its cooperation with Perikatan Nasional supplied the stable governing bloc. Pakatan Harapan said it would review its defeat and work to rebuild voters' trust.
Ismail identified public welfare and well-being as the administration's central long-term priority. The immediate political test will be allocating portfolios among Barisan Nasional component parties and deciding whether Perikatan Nasional lawmakers enter the executive council. That lineup, once approved by the ruler, will show how the two-thirds coalition intends to convert its electoral advantage into day-to-day government.
