Lagarde to leave ECB in February as Europe begins search for successor

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will step down on February 7, 2027, the bank announced on October 29. The decision brings forward a leadership transition at the Frankfurt institution, with her term originally due to end in October 2027. European Council President António Costa confirmed the departure and said the succession process would begin immediately.

Lagarde informed the ECB’s Governing Council and Costa of her decision, according to the central bank’s announcement. Costa thanked her for leading the institution since November 2019 through the pandemic, war in Europe, energy crises and inflation shocks. He said the appointment process would proceed without delay to ensure a smooth transition.

Explaining her decision at a news conference, Lagarde said she wanted greater freedom to address issues beyond monetary policy, Reuters reported. She described the obligation of neutrality attached to her position and said she no longer felt comfortable with that constraint. She did not specify the broader issues on which she intended to speak.

The announcement coincided with the ECB’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged, according to Reuters. The bank warned that higher energy costs were increasing inflation risks. The leadership change therefore comes as policymakers weigh price pressures and economic uncertainty, with decisions that shape financing conditions for businesses and households across the euro area.

Reuters reported that former Dutch central bank governor Klaas Knot and Spain’s Pablo Hernández de Cos were widely regarded as leading potential successors. Neither was named as the next president in the official announcements. The agency said financial markets showed little immediate reaction, as analysts stressed that the institution’s established framework could support continuity.

The European Council will appoint the next president under the procedure in Article 283 of the EU treaty, the ECB said. Costa said euro-area leaders would seek a timely decision. The announced timetable places the transition before France’s presidential election next year, AP reported, while the official statements left the choice of successor open.
