Lando Norris won the Dutch Grand Prix for McLaren on Sunday, taking his second consecutive Formula One victory after recovering from losing the lead to championship leader Kimi Antonelli. Norris completed the 72 laps at Circuit Zandvoort in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 44.859 seconds, finishing 11.536 seconds ahead of the Mercedes driver, according to Formula One's provisional classification.
The race changed almost immediately when home favourite Max Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull and struck the barrier at the end of the opening lap. Formula One reported that Verstappen said he was unhurt, but the heavy crash brought out a red flag and ended his race before he completed a lap. Norris had started from pole and led the initial launch, but Antonelli passed him when racing resumed.
Antonelli built an advantage during the first part of the restarted contest. Norris then gained pace on harder tyres and closed the gap before retaking first place in the final third, Formula One and Sky Sports reported. A late virtual safety car followed when Esteban Ocon's Haas stopped on the circuit, prompting Antonelli and several other drivers to make another pit stop on fresher tyres.
Mercedes moved Antonelli ahead of teammate George Russell for a final pursuit, but Norris controlled the remaining laps. Russell held off the Ferraris to finish third, 15.906 seconds behind the winner, while Lewis Hamilton placed fourth and Charles Leclerc fifth. Oscar Piastri took sixth for McLaren, with Liam Lawson seventh despite receiving a 10-second penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags.
The result strengthened Antonelli's championship position even though he missed victory. Sky Sports calculated that the Italian's lead increased to 59 points, while reigning champion Norris reduced his deficit to 83 points. McLaren had gone without a Grand Prix win in the opening 10 rounds, but Norris has now followed his Hungarian Grand Prix success with another victory after the summer break.
Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly completed the top 10. Six drivers failed to finish, including Verstappen, Ocon and Valtteri Bottas. Formula One listed the classification as provisional and noted time penalties for Lawson, Franco Colapinto and Carlos Sainz. The championship next moves to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix weekend from September 4 to 6.
