Russia launched one of its largest drone attacks of the war on Ukraine early Wednesday, deploying over 200 drones that targeted energy infrastructure across the country and left approximately 170,000 people without power as they celebrated New Year's Day.
Ukrainian air defense forces reported intercepting the majority of the incoming drones, but several strikes successfully hit power facilities in multiple regions. The attacks caused significant damage to the electrical grid, particularly affecting the Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, calling it another act of Russian terrorism against civilians. Emergency crews have been working around the clock to restore power to affected areas, with authorities reporting that some households had electricity restored within hours.
