Kylian Mbappé scored twice as Real Madrid beat Sevilla 4–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, October 18. Reuters reported that the win cut the gap to LaLiga leaders Barcelona to six points, with the rivals due to meet a week later.
Madrid rose to third with 21 points, one behind Atlético Madrid, while Sevilla stood sixth on 14, according to Reuters. The club's match report said Madrid had now won all six home games this season, extending their perfect record at the Bernabéu.
Arda Güler struck from outside the penalty area in the 30th minute to open the scoring. Mbappé doubled the lead seven minutes later. Madrid's account described Jude Bellingham supplying a backheel before the French forward turned past a defender and rounded the goalkeeper to finish.
Mbappé then earned and converted a penalty in the 63rd minute. Substitute Manu Bueno replied for Sevilla in the 80th, but Yan Diomande scored two minutes later to restore the three-goal margin. Madrid also reported Éder Militão's return in the 85th minute, nearly six months after his injury.
In remarks published by the club, coach José Mourinho praised the quality of the goals and his team's control. He said possession did not always reflect a match accurately, but believed it illustrated Madrid's dominance on this occasion against an opponent they respected.
Mourinho nevertheless placed the next Champions League fixture ahead of preparations for Barcelona. He said he would not turn his attention to the following Sunday's league opponent until Wednesday night. The victory therefore leaves Madrid closer to the leaders, with a European assignment still to come before El Clásico.
