NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has reached SpaceX's hangar at Launch Complex 39A in Florida for attachment to its Falcon Heavy rocket, one of the observatory's final milestones before a planned August 30 launch. Space.com reported the overnight August 25 transfer in an update published August 26, while NASA said liftoff remains targeted for no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT, or 11:26 UTC, from Kennedy Space Center.
The roughly $4 billion mission is NASA's next flagship space observatory and is launching about nine months ahead of the agency's required readiness schedule, according to Reuters. Roman combines sharp infrared imaging with a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble's. NASA expects its broad surveys to map billions of galaxies and examine dark energy, dark matter, black holes and planets beyond the solar system.
The bus-sized telescope travelled inside its protective payload fairing from Kennedy's hazardous-servicing facility to the SpaceX hangar in a vehicle convoy. Engineers will now connect the enclosed observatory to Falcon Heavy, perform final fit checks and tests, and move the assembled rocket to the launch pad. NASA and SpaceX plan a launch-readiness review on August 28 before making the final decision to proceed.
After rocket separation, Roman is expected to take about 30 days to reach a halo orbit around the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, or L2, roughly 1.5 million kilometres from Earth in the direction opposite the Sun. That stable environment requires relatively little station-keeping and supports sensitive observations. A checkout period of about three months is expected before routine science operations begin.
Roman's Wide Field Instrument will study large areas of sky efficiently, potentially measuring light from a billion galaxies during the mission. Its Coronagraph Instrument will demonstrate technology that blocks a star's glare so scientists can directly examine some exoplanets and planet-forming disks. Together, the instruments are designed to test cosmic expansion and gravity across immense distances while producing a statistical census of planetary systems in the Milky Way.
NASA has set a five-year primary mission and aims to operate Roman for 10 years, with processed science data to be made publicly available. Prelaunch briefings are scheduled for August 29 and NASA's live launch coverage is due to begin at 6:20 a.m. EDT on August 30. The immediate milestones are the rocket integration, final tests, readiness review and rollout, with weather and technical conditions still able to change the launch time.
