Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, MTV announced on Wednesday, September 9. The career honor will be presented during the September 27 ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, recognizing the band's lasting influence on music videos and popular culture more than three decades after its original run ended.
MTV timed the announcement to the 34th anniversary of Nirvana's first VMA performance on September 9, 1992. At that broadcast, Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl played Lithium from the breakthrough album Nevermind in a turbulent appearance that became part of the show's history. UPI and Rolling Stone both confirmed the anniversary connection in their reports on the new award.
The Video Vanguard Award is intended to recognize an artist's body of work and impact on the music-video form. Rolling Stone reported that Nirvana made seven videos before Cobain's death in 1994, including Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come as You Are, In Bloom and Heart-Shaped Box. The outlet also noted that later archival videos for You Know You're Right and Dumb appeared in 2002 and 2023.
Nirvana's visual legacy developed alongside the rapid success of Nevermind in 1991 and In Utero in 1993. The Samuel Bayer-directed Smells Like Teen Spirit video placed the band in a chaotic school-gym setting and became a defining image of its rise. The group's connection with the network also included MTV Unplugged in New York, recorded in 1993 and released as an album after Cobain's death.
MTV's announcement did not identify who will accept the award and did not announce a Nirvana performance. Pitchfork reported that Grohl, Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear have occasionally reunited for one-off tributes with guest singers, most recently at the FireAid benefit in 2025. Those appearances provide context for the surviving musicians' activity but do not establish plans for the September ceremony.
The VMAs will air live on CBS and MTV on September 27 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time and will stream on Paramount+, according to MTV's event information and UPI. The award adds a major retrospective tribute to the 2026 program while leaving the participants and presentation format unresolved.
