A powerful winter storm is sweeping across the Northeastern United States, bringing heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain that is expected to create hazardous travel conditions during one of the busiest holiday weekends of the year.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for large portions of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, with the National Weather Service warning that conditions could become dangerous from Friday evening through Saturday morning.

New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area could see between 4 to 8 inches of snow, with some forecasts suggesting a worst-case scenario of 8 to 10 inches in certain areas. Peak snowfall rates may reach 1 to 2 inches per hour during the height of the storm.

The Philadelphia region is preparing for a wintry mix beginning around 5 p.m. Friday, with temperatures in the upper 20s. PennDOT has announced vehicle restrictions on state highways throughout south central Pennsylvania in anticipation of deteriorating conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a stark warning to travelers: "People should consider delaying all travel until after the winter storm is over. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution."

This storm follows closely on the heels of the devastating weather that has battered California throughout the Christmas holiday, where multiple atmospheric rivers caused fatal flooding and mudslides. The Santa Barbara Airport remains closed due to runway flooding.

Airlines have already begun issuing travel waivers, and transportation officials are urging holiday travelers to check flight statuses and road conditions before departing.
