Pacific nations press for faster emissions cuts at pre-COP31 talks

Pacific nations urged faster emissions cuts at climate talks in Nadi, Fiji, on October 7, seeking to keep the 1.5°C warming goal central to COP31 negotiations. Reuters reported that delegates pressed for stronger action against rising seas and extreme weather as ministerial discussions began.

Representatives from more than 50 countries are attending the preparatory meeting, according to the organisers. Fiji, Tuvalu and Australia are hosting events from October 5 to 8, with priorities including cleaner energy, protection of the ocean and better access to climate finance for vulnerable countries.

Reuters reported that leaders adopted the Taku Pakasoa declaration on October 6 after a visit to Tuvalu. It called for substantial, swift and lasting emissions reductions, warning that each increment of warming increases the danger of irreversible losses. Its name reflects the Tuvaluan idea of strength through unity and collective action.

Fiji climate minister Lynda Tabuya told delegates that climate data reflected changes already visible to Pacific communities, Reuters reported. She pointed to seawater reaching homes, damaged reefs and villages that have relocated, and urged governments to uphold the 1.5°C goal despite forecasts that warming will exceed it.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme reported that Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka urged leaders to close the gap between promises and delivery. After visiting Funafuti, he said future progress should be judged by whether Tuvalu receives support to expand coastal protection and whether its shores remain habitable.

According to Australia's climate department, COP31 will take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from November 9 to 20, with Australia leading negotiations. The Pacific meetings will help shape its priorities. Organisers say their aim is to turn commitments into practical outcomes, including finance and greater resilience for communities facing climate impacts.
