Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage won the men’s javelin title at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, on Monday, September 28, with a final throw of 88.55 metres. India’s Yashvir Singh took silver with a personal best of 85.72 metres, while teammate Rohit Yadav earned bronze at 84.35 metres, according to final results reported by Dawn and NDTV.
The contest brought together several leading South Asian throwers in wet conditions at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park athletics stadium. Pathirage arrived after winning the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest earlier in September, according to World Athletics. The Asian Games final gave him another major title in a season of strong international results.
Pathirage stood third after three rounds with 83.56 metres, Dawn reported. His fourth throw reached 88.33 metres and moved him into first place. He extended that lead with 88.55 metres on his sixth and final attempt. The late improvement matters because initial reports issued before the last round listed shorter winning and silver-medal distances.
Singh’s sixth attempt measured 85.72 metres, improving his own mark and securing second place, NDTV reported. Yadav’s best of 84.35 metres came in the third round and held up for bronze. Their two medals gave India a double podium finish even though the Sri Lankan finished more than two metres ahead of the silver medallist.
Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, the Olympic champion from Paris 2024, placed fourth with 80.29 metres. Dawn reported that Nadeem improved on his third attempt but recorded fouls on his final three throws. The result left the defending Olympic champion outside the medals while the top three places went to Sri Lanka and India.
The final standings are Pathirage first, Singh second, Yadav third and Nadeem fourth. The result adds an Asian Games gold to Pathirage’s recent world-level success and gives India two medals in the same event. Athletics competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Games continues through September 29, according to Asian Athletics.
