The annual Perseid meteor shower is approaching an unusually favorable peak, with a new moon expected to leave northern skies dark overnight from August 12 into August 13. The Associated Press reported the outlook on August 9, while NASA and meteor organizations said observers at suitably dark locations could see dozens of streaks an hour if clouds stay away.
NASA describes the Perseids as one of the year’s most plentiful and popular showers, with an ideal rate of about 50 to 100 meteors per hour. The American Meteor Society gives a more conservative expectation of roughly 30 to 50 per hour from rural sites. Those figures are not guarantees: light pollution, cloud, haze and how much sky an observer can see all reduce the actual count.
The display occurs when Earth crosses a trail of dust and small rocky fragments shed by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. The particles enter the atmosphere at about 59 kilometers per second, according to NASA, heating the air around them and producing bright paths commonly called shooting stars. Some Perseids become longer-lasting fireballs because larger fragments create more intense flashes.
The shower is active for weeks, but the highest activity is forecast around August 12 and 13. The International Meteor Organization places the principal maximum near 21:00 UTC on August 12, and the American Meteor Society says the radiant in the constellation Perseus climbs higher after midnight for northern observers. Viewers do not need a telescope or need to stare directly at Perseus, because trails can cross any part of the sky.
Observers are advised to find a safe, open location away from urban lights, allow their eyes about 20 to 30 minutes to adapt to darkness and avoid phone screens. Lying back provides a wider view than looking in one direction. Northern latitudes receive the best display because Perseus rises high there; much of the Southern Hemisphere has a more limited view, although some meteors may still appear before dawn.
This year’s new moon removes a major natural source of glare and makes faint meteors easier to see, but local weather will remain decisive. The peak follows a total solar eclipse visible along a narrow path through Greenland, Iceland and Spain earlier on August 12, creating a notable day of sky events. Astronomers stress that the meteor shower is safe to watch with unaided eyes, unlike the daytime eclipse, which requires proper solar protection.
