Russia carried out one of this year's longest sustained attacks on Ukraine overnight on December 27, 2025, launching 519 drones and 40 missiles at Ukrainian cities just one day before President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump in Florida.
The aerial assault on Kyiv and surrounding regions killed at least two people and injured 44 others, including two children. The attack lasted nearly 10 hours, with Ukraine's air defense forces managing to shoot down 503 enemy targets.
More than 40% of residential buildings in Kyiv were left without heating amid freezing temperatures, with over 320,000 consumers losing power. The attack included Shahed and Gerbera drones, Iskander-M ballistic missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, and Caliber cruise missiles.
Zelenskyy condemned the timing of the attack, stating: "Today Russia demonstrated how it responds to peace talks between Ukraine and the United States. They carried out massive attacks precisely as we move toward peace negotiations." The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the strike was "a response to Kyiv's terrorist attacks on civilian targets in Russia."
