Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least 25 people across Ukraine on October 7, including five children, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening address. He reported 100 injured. The Kyiv Independent subsequently reported 26 deaths, showing that the toll was still changing as rescue work continued.
The heaviest losses were in Pryluky, in the northern Chernihiv region. Reuters reported that a missile destroyed a five-storey apartment building. Zelenskyy said a Kh-101 missile struck the residential building directly, killing 19 people, including the five children. He said crews worked throughout the day to clear the rubble.
The Associated Press reported attacks on Kyiv and a dozen other regions. Zelenskyy had warned the previous day that intelligence services expected a major Russian strike. Despite that warning, Ukrainian defenses did not stop all the incoming weapons, AP reported.
Reuters reported damage to industrial facilities and energy infrastructure, with deaths also recorded in Kyiv, Oleksandria and Kremenchuk. These reports described an attack affecting several cities, while the destruction of the apartment building in Pryluky accounted for most of the deaths in the president’s evening tally.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces shot down 44 cruise and ballistic missiles and suppressed 117 Shahed drones during the night. He stressed that some weapons got through and that ballistic missiles were particularly difficult to intercept. These figures are Ukraine’s account of its defensive operations.
The president called for additional air-defense missiles, faster deliveries from partners and sufficient production to keep batteries supplied every day. With rescue operations and casualty updates continuing, the immediate priorities outlined in his address were assistance after the strikes and strengthening protection against further attacks.
