HBO Max medical drama The Pitt collected three awards during the second night of the 78th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 6, including outstanding guest actor in a drama series for 73-year-old Ernest Harden Jr. The Associated Press and TheWrap reported that the first-time nominee also saw the series recognized for drama casting and prosthetic makeup at the Peacock Theater.
The Pitt entered the season as the most-nominated program with 25 nominations and as the reigning winner for outstanding drama series after its first season. The series follows one day inside a hospital emergency department, and Harden plays Louie Cloverfield, a familiar patient struggling with alcoholism. His victory marked the program's first acting award of the current Emmy season.
Harden became emotional after his name was announced and described the experience backstage as overwhelming, according to the AP. His screen career began with a speaking part in the 1975 thriller Three Days of the Condor, followed by a three-season role on the sitcom The Jeffersons. Decades of work had not previously brought him major awards recognition, making the first nomination and victory a notable personal milestone.
Shailene Woodley won outstanding guest actress in a drama series for Paradise, defeating a field that included three performers from The Pitt. Apple TV horror comedy Widow's Bay earned four awards, including production design and sound honors, while Spider-Noir also took four, among them visual effects and stunt awards. Pluribus, Margo's Got Money Troubles and Netflix limited series Beef each secured three craft prizes in the early results.
The ceremony also returned South Park to the winners' circle for outstanding animated program, its first Emmy victory since 2013, TheWrap reported. Julie Andrews received outstanding character voice-over performance for Bridgerton. The night was significant beyond individual results because five categories shifted from the main broadcast to this earlier ceremony, including the supporting acting races for limited or anthology series or movies.
The Television Academy is presenting more than 100 awards across the weekend ceremonies, formerly branded as the Creative Arts Emmys. Edited highlights from the first two nights will air on FXX on September 12 and stream on Hulu the next day. The remaining 19 awards, including the top series and lead acting categories, are scheduled for the televised ceremony at the Peacock Theater on September 14, hosted by Mariska Hargitay and carried live by NBC and Peacock.
