A total solar eclipse crossed the Arctic and western Europe on August 12, briefly turning day into twilight for people in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and Spain and drawing millions to the narrow path of totality. Associated Press and European news organizations documented the spectacle after the Moon fully covered the Sun, while a partial eclipse extended across much of Europe, northwestern Africa and parts of North America.
The shadow began over the Arctic Ocean, crossed northeastern Greenland and western Iceland, then raced over the Atlantic toward the Iberian Peninsula. Spain’s National Geographic Institute said the totality path traversed the country from west to east, passing cities including A Coruña, Oviedo, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia before reaching the Balearic Islands near sunset. The maximum total phase anywhere along the route lasted about two minutes and 18 seconds.
The event carried unusual historical weight for Europe. It was the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999, according to eclipse records cited by AP and timeanddate, and Spain experienced its first total eclipse in more than a century. El País reported that at least 15 million people stood within the roughly 300-kilometre-wide Spanish shadow corridor, where largely clear skies offered favorable viewing in many locations.
A total eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun and appears large enough to cover the Sun’s bright visible disk. During totality, the much fainter outer atmosphere of the Sun, called the corona, becomes visible. Researchers use the temporary darkness to study the corona’s shape, magnetic structure and hot plasma, observations that help investigate how the solar wind and explosive space-weather events develop.
The Moon’s shadow moved across Earth’s surface at roughly 3,430 kilometres per hour, according to the Paris Observatory figure reported by Le Monde. NASA broadcast views from sites along the path and paired the images with scientific explanations. Conditions varied by location because the Sun stood low over parts of Spain near sunset, but post-event reports showed clear views from numerous Spanish cities and crowds gathered across Iceland and the Iberian Peninsula.
Authorities and scientists repeatedly warned that certified solar filters were essential before and after totality because ordinary sunglasses do not protect eyes from direct sunlight. Only observers inside the totality corridor could briefly look without filters while the Sun was completely covered. The eclipse now becomes a scientific and logistical reference for another total eclipse due to cross parts of Spain in August 2027, while Spain’s next total solar eclipse after its unusual three-year sequence is not expected until 2053.
