Turkmenistan has stopped eight major methane leaks at ageing oil and gas facilities after alerts from a United Nations satellite-monitoring system, according to new data reported by The Guardian on Monday. The repairs are the first documented group of mitigation actions in a country repeatedly identified as a global hotspot for emissions of the powerful greenhouse gas.
The UN Environment Programme's Methane Alert and Response System, known as MARS, sent Turkmenistan 192 alerts about methane plumes during the past year. The country supplied on-the-ground information or potential repair plans in response to about 20 percent of those notices. Three of the six largest leaks detected worldwide by the system in the latest six-month period were in Turkmenistan, as were nine of the 50 largest.
Officials and operators repaired corroded pipelines, faulty wells and malfunctioning flares to stop the eight releases. UNEP programme manager Meghan Demeter described the results as evidence that a chain running from satellite detection to notification and physical repairs can work quickly. She also cautioned that eight closures remain an initial step rather than a major reduction in the country's overall emissions.
MARS combines artificial intelligence with observations from more than a dozen satellites. Analysts conduct two stages of review before sending verified alerts to governments or companies. When an operator reports a repair, the system continues watching the location and records a successful mitigation only after satellite data indicate that emissions have ended. Across all participating countries, alerts have so far contributed to 43 confirmed leak closures.
Methane traps far more heat than carbon dioxide over the short term and accounts for about a quarter of current global warming, according to UNEP data cited in the report. Because it remains in the atmosphere for less time than carbon dioxide, reducing methane can slow warming relatively quickly. The IEA's 2026 tracker also identifies Turkmenistan as a persistent emissions hotspot and says satellite observations suggest its methane output rose alongside gas production earlier this decade.
The latest results show uneven international engagement. Kazakhstan has also stopped eight leaks, while Mexico responded to all 23 alerts it received but had not completed a repair at the time of reporting. The United States received 138 alerts, the second-highest total, but supplied no responses and recorded no closures during the year. UNEP is expanding technical assistance, while UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged countries to respond to at least 80 percent of alerts.
