UK announces Typhoon missions to defend Saudi Arabia from Houthi attacks

Britain announced on October 20 that Royal Air Force Typhoon jets will fly defensive missions over Saudi Arabia following escalating Houthi attacks. The Ministry of Defence said the flights would help protect cities and critical infrastructure against aerial threats. Reuters and AP also reported the decision.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said the fighters would help defend Saudi airspace against drones and missiles. The ministry specified that these aircraft will not carry out offensive strikes against the Houthis. AP described their task as intercepting airborne threats rather than attacking targets on the ground.

The package also includes an RAF A400M transport aircraft to move defence supplies within Saudi Arabia, the ministry said. British military advisers will assist Saudi staff officers. These measures expand existing support that already includes air-defence equipment and personnel.

Separately, the ministry announced an extension of aerial refuelling support for Saudi defensive operations, including attacks on Houthi military targets in Yemen that threaten Saudi and Yemeni people. Britain first announced Voyager tanker support on September 22 after a Saudi request. The limits on Typhoon strikes therefore do not describe every element of British assistance.

London linked the decision to regional security and economic risks. According to Reuters, Britain says Houthi attacks threaten stability, energy supplies and trade routes. The ministry also warned that escalating Gulf violence can raise living costs in Britain and deepen the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

AP reported that Britain stressed there is no military solution to the conflict. The new patrols broaden its military involvement while the government continues to advocate a diplomatic resolution. The announcement sets out planned support; it does not establish that the newly announced fighter missions have already begun.
