Ukraine launched hundreds of drones across Russia on Sunday, August 16, in one of Kyiv's largest aerial attacks since the full-scale war began, according to The Associated Press and Russian authorities. At least six people died in Russia, while Russian strikes killed at least five people in Ukraine and injured others, underscoring the growing danger to civilians far from the front line.
Russia's Defense Ministry said it destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said about 600 headed toward the capital and 201 were destroyed over the Moscow region. The Guardian reported a separate ministry claim of 1,478 drones intercepted during the full preceding 24 hours, describing it as Russia's highest daily claim; the newspaper said the number could not be independently verified.
Moscow regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said an 83-year-old man died when a drone hit a private home. He also reported a fire at a Wildberries distribution warehouse in Podolsk, south of Moscow. Rostov governor Yury Slyusar said attacks involving more than 150 drones struck three towns, killed five people, damaged homes and a railway station, and started a forest fire.
Ukraine also faced deadly attacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a Russian missile strike killed two people and wounded 14 in Kryvyi Rih, while another person died in Sumy. Local administrator Ivan Fedorov said a man and woman died when a strike hit their home in Zaporizhzhia region. Fires in Kyiv injured six people and burned kiosks at a major book market near Pochaina metro station.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih said one of its sites was hit and operations were partly suspended. Russia said it targeted a metallurgical plant and military-industrial facilities, including a Flamingo missile production site. Ukraine says it attacks facilities that support Russian military logistics, but warehouses also hold goods belonging to civilian businesses; the competing military claims were not independently confirmed.
The confrontation also reached NATO territory. Romania's Defense Ministry said a Spanish F-18 on air-policing duty shot down a drone after surveillance systems detected it entering Romanian airspace near Galati at 4:44 a.m.; the fighter received authorization and intercepted it at 5:01 a.m. Romanian officials did not identify its origin, while Moldova said it had tracked a Geran-type Shahed drone moving from Ukraine toward Romania. The incidents show how expanding long-range attacks are increasing civilian losses and the risk of escalation beyond both countries.
