FIFA has selected the United States to host the first Women’s Club World Cup, scheduled for January 5–30, 2028. The decision, announced on October 22 and reported by Reuters, establishes the host country for a competition bringing together 19 clubs from all six continental confederations.
Seven teams have already qualified: Arsenal of England, Barcelona of Spain, Gotham FC of the United States, Club América of Mexico, Corinthians of Brazil, Wuhan Jiangda of China and Naegohyang of North Korea. Reuters reported that the remaining 12 participants have yet to be determined.
The allocation gives Europe six places, while Asia, Africa, North and Central America and the Caribbean, and South America each receive three. Oceania receives one. According to FIFA, qualification will draw on sporting results in each confederation’s leading club competition across seasons ending from 2024 through 2027.
FIFA said the United States’ experience staging major tournaments, its infrastructure and services, and local interest in women’s football supported the choice. Chief women’s football officer Sarai Bareman cited these factors in explaining the decision. The country hosted the men’s Club World Cup in 2025 and shared the 2026 men’s World Cup with Canada and Mexico, Reuters noted.
The governing body also approved financial arrangements for the separate 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Each participating national association will receive $2.5 million in preparation funding, matching the men’s 2026 tournament. FIFA said players will receive equivalent service levels, while any tournament surplus will go to participating associations, with a specific amount reserved for players.
The decisions link preparations for the new club competition with support for the national-team tournament. FIFA said additional details of the 2027 financial arrangements will be discussed at its Council meeting in December 2026. For the 2028 club event, the next outstanding element is completion of the field alongside the seven teams already confirmed.
