A powerful winter storm has slammed into the Northeastern United States, canceling more than 1,400 flights, delaying over 11,000 others, and triggering states of emergency in New York and New Jersey during one of the busiest holiday travel periods of the year.

New York City's three largest airports — JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark International — bore the brunt of the disruptions, accounting for 391 delays and 759 cancellations combined. Central Park recorded just over four inches of snow, the city's heaviest snowfall since January 2022.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for impacted areas in New York, while New York City Emergency Management issued a travel advisory through Saturday. New Jersey also declared a state of emergency as the storm brought dangerous conditions including heavy snow, ice, and below-zero wind chills.

Some areas east of the Finger Lakes and the Catskills in New York saw 8 to almost 12 inches of snow, with Hartwick, New York recording the highest totals at 11.5 inches by Saturday morning. The storm has disrupted holiday travel for millions of Americans returning home after Christmas.

The National Weather Service warns the system will intensify over the next few days, with arctic air descending into the Plains beginning Sunday, followed by another potent winter storm across the upper Midwest to the Great Lakes Sunday night through Monday. Conditions are expected to persist through Tuesday.
