Skywatchers are in for a treat as 2026 kicks off with a stunning celestial double feature: the year's first full moon, known as the Wolf Moon, will also be a supermoon, appearing larger and brighter than usual in the night sky, while the Quadrantid meteor shower peaks this weekend.

The Wolf Moon supermoon will reach its peak illumination on Monday, January 6, creating an exceptional viewing opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts worldwide. As a supermoon, this lunar event occurs when the full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, making it appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a typical full moon.

The name "Wolf Moon" originates from Native American traditions, referring to the howling of wolves during the cold January nights when food was scarce. This first supermoon of 2026 sets the stage for what astronomers predict will be an exciting year for celestial observation.

Complementing the supermoon, the Quadrantid meteor shower is also active, having peaked Saturday evening and continuing through January 16.
