Disney and Marvel Studios’ rerelease of Avengers: Endgame led the North American box office on Friday, September 25, taking an estimated $11.2 million from 3,060 theaters, according to Saturday reports by Variety and TheWrap. The result put the seven-year-old film ahead of several new releases during the first day of its return.
The film returned as Avengers: Endgame Encore, ahead of the planned December 18 release of Avengers: Doomsday. TheWrap reported that the new version includes a modified ending and additional scenes after the credits intended to connect it to the forthcoming film. Box-office database The Numbers lists September 25 as the date of the Disney rerelease in the United States and Canada.
Variety reported that A24’s new drama Primetime took an estimated $8.49 million on Friday from 2,874 theaters, placing second. Paramount’s Heart of the Beast followed with about $7.45 million from 3,435 locations. Sony’s Resident Evil, the previous weekend’s top film, collected about $6.9 million from 3,684 theaters and ranked fourth for the day.
TheWrap said industry estimates pointed to a roughly $26 million three-day weekend for Endgame Encore. That forecast is provisional: Saturday and Sunday ticket sales had not yet been finalized when the reports were published. The Friday figures also remained estimates, so the final weekend order and totals could change as distributors report updated receipts.
The opening-day lead gives theaters an unusually strong showing from a film first released in 2019 while several newer titles compete for audiences. The rerelease also puts Marvel’s earlier ensemble story back on screens before Doomsday. Final weekend estimates are expected after Sunday’s performances, when the size of the Encore run and its position against the new films will become clearer.
