Philippe Jaenada won the 2026 Prix Goncourt on November 3 for L’Inconnue du quai de Javel, published by Flammarion, according to Télérama and AFP reporting carried by Europe 1. The jury announced its choice at the Drouant restaurant in Paris, awarding the 124th edition of the French literary prize.
Jaenada succeeds Laurent Mauvignier, who won in 2025 with La Maison vide. Télérama lists Yannick Haenel, Clémentine Mélois and Sylvain Prudhomme as the other finalists. The announcement ends a selection process whose official calendar included successive lists in September and October.
The winning novel revisits the death of Louise Cansot, an artists’ model in the Montparnasse district of Paris. According to Télérama, she was 29 when she was murdered in September 1949 and her body was found on the quai de Javel. Police closed the investigation without establishing who killed her.
The book draws on archival research to reconstruct both the case and Cansot’s life. Télérama describes Jaenada’s conclusion as a hypothesis about the killer’s identity. The La Rochelle library catalogue likewise presents the novel as an attempt to resolve an old case, rather than reporting a new judicial finding.
AFP’s report describes the 62-year-old writer as having built a loyal readership through long books about criminal cases, including Sulak, La Petite Femelle and La Serpe. Télérama traces his development from comic autofiction to narratives in which he investigates lives and events from the past.
The award brings renewed attention to that body of work and to the story of a woman whose murder remained unresolved by police. Published by Flammarion in 2026, the 528-page novel is already listed in the La Rochelle library catalogue. It now joins the succession of books recognised by the Goncourt jury.
