Hello Sunshine cuts half its staff after Witherspoon and Mediawan buyback

Hello Sunshine, the US production company associated with Reese Witherspoon, cut roughly half its staff on October 30, according to TheWrap and Deadline. About 30 employees are affected as the company refocuses on film, television and Reese’s Book Club following its acquisition by Witherspoon and France’s Mediawan earlier this month.

Deadline cited a source familiar with the reductions, while TheWrap also reported approximately 30 departures. Both outlets said Hello Sunshine declined to comment. The staffing figures therefore come from media reporting rather than a public company announcement setting out the scale of the layoffs.

TheWrap reported that the direct-to-consumer team had been eliminated. That operation sought to turn the company’s audience into customers for products and content. According to Deadline, the remaining workforce is concentrating on screen production and the book club, with related social and digital marketing and partnerships also continuing.

The ownership change followed Candle Media’s acquisition of a controlling stake in 2021, when Hello Sunshine carried a valuation of $900 million. Screen International reported that the latest deal’s financial terms were not disclosed and that Witherspoon invested an undisclosed sum. The earlier valuation is therefore distinct from the unannounced price of the new transaction.

Founded in 2016, Hello Sunshine has built a catalogue including Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, Where the Crawdads Sing and Little Fires Everywhere, Screen International reported. Reese’s Book Club is included in the acquisition and supplies a pipeline of intellectual property. The cuts affect a producer with an established presence across television, film and literary adaptations.

In its acquisition announcement, Mediawan said Hello Sunshine would join a network of nearly 100 labels across the United States, Britain, Europe and beyond. The French group described its approach as providing resources and international reach while preserving creative independence. The next phase combines that wider production network with a smaller Hello Sunshine team focused on its retained activities.
