American singer Chris Brown received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, at London’s Southwark Crown Court on October 26, 2026. ITV reported that the 37-year-old admitted affray after attacking music producer Abraham Diaw at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair in February 2023. The sentence means he avoids immediate imprisonment.
His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, received a four-month sentence, also suspended for 12 months. ITV said both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that they pleaded guilty on July 24; the offence concerns the use or threat of unlawful violence that causes others to fear for their safety.
According to the prosecution’s account, the attack took place early on February 19, 2023. Brown struck the victim twice on the head with a glass bottle, and Akinlolu joined the assault. The victim sought treatment at St Mary’s Hospital for head and knee injuries. Prosecutors said the assault continued as he tried to escape through the club.
ITV reported that Judge Tony Baumgartner stressed the danger of repeated bottle blows to the head and the risk to people nearby. He said celebrity status and commercial success did not justify special treatment. AP reported that the judge considered Brown’s guilty plea, stable employment and charity work when deciding against immediate custody.
Defence lawyer Sallie Bennett-Jenkins told the court that Brown apologised to everyone present at the club, according to ITV. She described the episode as deeply regrettable and said it lasted no more than 20 seconds. The judge nevertheless emphasised the seriousness of violence by two people in a crowded venue.
The prosecution said Brown was arrested on May 15, 2025, after returning to Britain for a Manchester concert. Reuters reported that a £5 million bail security arrangement subsequently allowed his tour to proceed. The sentencing resolves this stage of the case; the one-year suspension means a further offence could lead to imprisonment.
