Matthew Rhys won two lead acting prizes at the 78th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Monday, September 14, taking the comedy award for Widow’s Bay and the limited or anthology series or movie award for The Beast in Me. The Television Academy’s updated records confirm both results, making the Welsh actor a double winner during television’s annual awards ceremony.
The Academy identifies his winning roles as Mayor Tom Loftis in Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay and Nile Jarvis in Netflix’s The Beast in Me. Rhys previously won the drama lead actor Emmy in 2018 for playing Philip Jennings in The Americans. His latest victories therefore give him acting wins across the drama, comedy and limited-series categories, with three Emmys listed in his official record.
Widow’s Bay also collected awards for supporting performers Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root, according to the Associated Press winners list. The same list names Hiro Murai as the comedy directing winner and Katie Dippold as the comedy writing winner for the series. Those results spread the programme’s recognition across its cast, direction and screenplay.
Among the evening’s other acting winners, AP reported that Jean Smart secured her fifth comedy lead actress award for the fifth and final season of Hacks. Noah Wyle won drama lead actor for The Pitt for a second time. Their repeat victories accompanied the multiple honours for Widow’s Bay as the ceremony continued announcing its television prizes.
The Television Academy scheduled the September 14 ceremony at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, with Mariska Hargitay hosting and NBC and Peacock carrying the live broadcast. It followed awards nights on September 5 and 6 that recognised artistic and technical work. This year’s presentation thus spans three nights, bringing performances and production achievements into the same wider awards programme.
The Academy’s entry for Rhys also lists him as an executive producer nominated for outstanding comedy series with Widow’s Bay. At the time of verification, that entry still marked the programme award as a nomination, while explicitly recording his two acting wins. The series prize remained separate from his confirmed personal results, with the full ceremony’s outcome still developing.
