Meta Platforms released Muse Glimmer on Monday, an open-weight artificial intelligence model intended to run on a personal computer, as chief executive Mark Zuckerberg argued that advanced AI should not remain under the control of a small number of companies or governments. The Associated Press reported the announcement on August 10, while Meta published the model and technical material for developers.
Muse Glimmer has about 30 billion parameters and accepts text and images while producing text, according to Meta's research release and model documentation. The company describes it as a compact multimodal system optimized for coding, reasoning and agent-style tasks, in which software can plan actions and use tools. Its weights allow developers to download, inspect and adapt the system rather than relying only on a hosted service.
Meta said the model can operate on a single consumer graphics processor after compression, bringing capable AI closer to local machines that do not need to send every request to a remote data center. The release uses an Apache 2.0 license, a broadly permissive framework that allows commercial use and modification. Meta also lists support for more than 100 languages and a long context window for handling large bodies of information.
The company said Muse Glimmer draws on knowledge distilled from its larger Muse Spark model. Meta paired the release with plans to provide developers access to Muse Spark 1.2, a more powerful system, though the smaller model is the one immediately available for local deployment. Zuckerberg presented the approach as a way to distribute technical capability more widely and encourage independent development.
The announcement places Meta back at the center of the debate over open AI. Open weights can reduce costs, support private on-device processing and let researchers test models directly, but security specialists have also warned that broadly available systems may be altered or misused. Meta's performance and safety claims remain company-reported, and independent developers will now be able to evaluate them on different hardware and workloads.
Muse Glimmer enters a crowded market in which OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Chinese developers compete on capability, price and access. The immediate test will be whether its local performance matches Meta's published results and whether software makers adopt it for practical products. Wider access to Muse Spark 1.2, along with independent safety and benchmark findings, will provide the next measure of the company's renewed open-model strategy.
