Filmmaker Robert Eggers is developing a new screen adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with Focus Features nearing a deal for the project after competition from other studios, according to entertainment trade reports published on September 22. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the plan, and TheWrap said an insider confirmed that Focus was closing in. The reports describe a project in development, rather than a completed film or a formally announced release.
The film would extend Eggers’ relationship with Focus Features, which released his 2024 film Nosferatu and has scheduled his next feature, Werwulf, for December 25, 2026. Focus lists Werwulf on its official film slate. TheWrap also noted the company’s work on The Northman and its international releases of The Witch and The Lighthouse, placing the prospective Shakespeare film within a continuing partnership.
According to TheWrap, A24, Sony and Warner Bros. also pursued the Romeo and Juliet project. That competition is the clearest reported sign of studio interest in Eggers’ next film after Werwulf. TheWrap described Focus as closing in on the adaptation, so the status of any final agreement should be treated as pending until the parties make one public. The available reports did not provide a confirmed cast or release date.
Shakespeare’s tragedy follows two young lovers from the feuding Montague and Capulet families in Verona, Italy. It has already inspired numerous screen versions, including Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptation. Eggers’ involvement would give another filmmaker the opportunity to interpret a familiar work, but the reports do not establish how he intends to stage the story or when production might begin.
For the film industry, the reported bidding process shows that several major distributors sought the same director-led adaptation. For audiences, the immediate confirmed milestone remains Werwulf: Focus currently lists it for a Christmas Day theatrical release. Further announcements from Eggers or Focus would be needed to establish the Romeo and Juliet film’s cast, production schedule, distribution agreement and theatrical date.
