Spain has cemented its position as one of the world's premier tourist destinations, with official figures confirming that the country welcomed a record-breaking 90 million international visitors during 2025. The milestone represents a significant recovery and growth beyond pre-pandemic levels, contributing an estimated 200 billion euros to the Spanish economy.
The tourism boom has been driven by strong demand from European visitors, particularly from the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, as well as increasing numbers of travelers from the United States and Asian markets. Beach destinations including the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, and the Costa del Sol continued to attract the largest numbers, while cities like Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville saw substantial growth in cultural tourism.
However, the record numbers have also intensified debates about overtourism in popular destinations. Residents in Barcelona, Mallorca, and other hotspots have staged protests against what they describe as the negative impacts of mass tourism on housing affordability, quality of life, and local culture. Several municipalities have implemented or are considering measures to limit tourist accommodation and regulate short-term rentals.
The Spanish government has emphasized its commitment to sustainable tourism development, announcing new initiatives to spread visitor flows more evenly across regions and seasons. Tourism Minister Fernando Clavijo stated that the goal is to increase the value rather than just the volume of tourism, encouraging longer stays and spending in lesser-known destinations.
