Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected an estimated $72 million from North American preview screenings ahead of its first full weekend, setting a reported industry record and surpassing the preview benchmark held by Avengers: Endgame. The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios release opened across the United States on Friday, July 31, placing Tom Holland's superhero sequel at the center of one of the summer cinema season's most closely watched weekends.
Variety reported the $72 million estimate on Friday as early ticket data arrived from theaters. The total includes Thursday previews and earlier access screenings, making comparisons with older releases imperfect because preview schedules have expanded over time. Even with that qualification, the result provides a strong signal of immediate demand for the fourth solo Spider-Man film starring Holland.
Sony's official materials confirm that Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film and that Holland returns as Peter Parker. Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo and Zendaya are among the principal cast members listed by Sony in international release information. The studio's synopsis places Parker in a world that no longer remembers him, fighting crime full time while watching his former friends continue their lives.
Forecasts remained unusually wide as Friday sales developed. Current box-office reporting said Sony was publicly projecting a more cautious domestic weekend of about $190 million to $195 million, while outside estimates reached above $300 million. Those figures are projections rather than final receipts, which will only become clearer after Saturday and Sunday attendance is counted.
The opening follows Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned about $260 million domestically on its opening weekend in 2021. It also arrives while Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey remains a major draw; AP reported that the overall 2026 summer box office had passed $3 billion by the previous weekend. The overlap gives theater operators two large releases aimed at partly different audiences during the same period.
Attention now turns to whether ordinary Friday-to-Sunday sales can sustain the exceptional preview pace. Studios and tracking firms will issue revised estimates through the weekend, followed by more complete domestic and international totals. Whatever the final ranking, the preview result has already made Brand New Day a consequential test of theatrical demand for superhero films and for the wider summer market.
