Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5 crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office on Sunday, July 26, becoming the sixth Pixar film to reach the milestone. The Associated Press reported estimated totals of $448 million from theaters in the United States and Canada and $573 million from international markets, putting the animated sequel at roughly $1.02 billion globally. The result arrived as the film earned an estimated $10 million in North America during the weekend.
TheWrap reported that the fifth Toy Story film added about $34 million worldwide over the weekend and became the third movie released in 2026 to pass $1 billion. It followed The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and the Michael Jackson biopic Michael into this year's billion-dollar group. According to TheWrap, Toy Story 5 had also moved ahead of both titles to become the year's highest-grossing film at the time of the estimate.
The film opened in June with $160 million from 4,425 North American theaters and another $152 million overseas, according to Variety, producing a $312 million worldwide debut. That was the franchise's largest opening without adjusting for inflation and the second-biggest opening weekend for an animated film. Variety reported a production budget of about $250 million, excluding global marketing costs.
Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, the sequel returns to Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the other toys as Bonnie becomes absorbed by a child-oriented tablet called Lilypad. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack again provide the central voices. The technology-versus-traditional-play story has helped the film remain a family option while competing with Minions & Monsters and Disney's live-action Moana.
Toy Story 5 is the third installment in the series to exceed $1 billion after Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4. Pixar's other films above the threshold are Finding Dory, Incredibles 2 and Inside Out 2. TheWrap said the new sequel is now approaching the $1.07 billion unadjusted worldwide total of Toy Story 4, which remains the franchise record until the current film passes it.
The milestone adds momentum to a North American summer box office that AP said has surpassed $3 billion and is running about 10% ahead of the same point last year. The figures for the latest weekend remain studio estimates, with final domestic results expected Monday. The next major competitive test comes with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opens Friday and will compete for audiences and premium screens.
