Taylor Swift will receive the first MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at the 2026 Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, CBS and MTV announced on September 21. The recognition will lift Swift's career total to 31 VMAs, according to the Associated Press, moving her past Beyoncé and making her the most-awarded artist in the event's history. The two musicians currently share the record with 30 awards each.
The new honor recognizes music artists whose sustained work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced visual storytelling, the networks said in their announcement. MTV cited Swift's development of a distinct directorial voice through narrative, symbolism, humor and autobiographical themes. She has received seven VMA nominations for Best Director and won that category four times.
The networks listed a body of directing work that includes The Man, cardigan, willow, All Too Well: The Short Film, Anti-Hero, Bejeweled, Fortnight, Lavender Haze, The Fate of Ophelia and Opalite. Their statement said the projects use interconnected narratives, cinematic settings and recurring details, reflecting the growing role performers play in deciding how their music appears on screen.
Swift also enters this year's competitive awards with nine nominations, the second-highest total, AP reported. Madonna leads with 11 nominations, while Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have seven apiece. Madonna is scheduled to open the ceremony in her first VMA performance in 23 years, and Nirvana will receive the 2026 Video Vanguard Award.
Snoop Dogg will host the two-hour show at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. It is scheduled to air live on CBS from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Eastern time, with a simultaneous MTV broadcast and U.S. streaming for Paramount+ Premium subscribers. The program will become available globally the following day on Paramount+ and MTV, according to CBS and MTV.
The inaugural honor adds a guaranteed historical result before the fan-voted and juried categories are settled. Online voting across 13 categories remains open until September 25, while voting for Best New Artist will continue during the broadcast, AP said. Organizers said more performers, presenters and special guests would be announced later in the week, leaving the final ceremony lineup still to come.
