The Ribbon Hero, a new Japanese animated film inspired by Osamu Tezuka's Princess Knight, began streaming worldwide on Netflix on August 8. The release gives animator Yuki Igarashi his first feature-length directing credit and brings a modern reworking of one of Tezuka's best-known creations to a global subscription audience.
Netflix describes the film as the story of a solitary hero who chooses to resist a harsh destiny in a carefully constructed fantasy world. Its official synopsis centers on Sapphire, who rises again as the Ribbon Hero after the monstrous Nergal devastates her kingdom, turning the story into a struggle to prevent her new home from suffering the same fate.
Igarashi previously drew attention for animation work connected with Jujutsu Kaisen and the Star Wars: Visions episode Lop and Ocho. Netflix presented the project as his feature debut and said the action-focused film combines his animation experience with a new interpretation of Princess Knight, the manga associated with pioneering artist Tezuka.
The production brings together several prominent visual artists. Netflix credits Kei Mochizuki with original character design, Mai Yoneyama with character-design cooperation, Issei Arakaki with animation character design and Cedric Herole as art director. Twin Engine is the production company, while Outline, the studio established by Igarashi, handled animation.
The worldwide launch places the film within Netflix's broader 2026 anime program. The company promoted the title alongside returning and new Japanese productions during industry events in Annecy and at Anime Expo, using the simultaneous release to make the feature available across its international service rather than beginning with a domestic theatrical run.
The release is now the first test of how audiences respond to Igarashi's move from acclaimed individual animation sequences to a full-length narrative. Netflix has not announced theatrical box-office plans for the title; its next measurable signals are likely to come from the platform's weekly viewing rankings and any subsequent production or festival announcements.
