The United States men's hockey team opened the 2025-2026 IIHF World Junior Championship with a convincing 6-3 victory over Germany, as they pursue a historic third consecutive gold medal.
Boston Bruins prospect Will Zellers led the charge with two goals and an assist, setting the tone for Team USA's title defense. The Americans are looking to become the first nation to win three consecutive World Juniors since Canada's remarkable five-year dynasty from 2005 to 2009.
The annual tournament, held this year in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, runs from December 26 through the medal games on Monday, January 5. Ten teams from across North America and Europe are competing for hockey's most prestigious junior title.
"We know what's at stake," said one Team USA player after the victory. "Nobody has done what we're trying to do in over 15 years. The pressure is there, but we're embracing it."
The tournament features the world's top under-20 hockey talent, with many players already drafted by NHL teams. Past World Junior stars include Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, and numerous other current NHL superstars who used the tournament as a springboard to professional careers.
Team USA will face tougher competition as the tournament progresses, with traditional powerhouses Canada, Finland, and Sweden all considered serious medal contenders.
